Comienza la producción del F-35 Lightning II
La compañía BAE Systems ha cortado el metal del primer componente del F-35, ésto se hizo en su planta de Manchester y el componente pertenece a la parte trasera del fuselaje, se calcula que para el 2010 ya estará en servicio en la USAF
Hay 3 versiones que se manejan de éste cazabombardero:
Con el Lightning II se planea sustituir el Harrier AV-8B,el A-10, el F-16 y el Hornet F/A-18.

- Short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL)
- Carrier variant (CV)
